12/1/2023 0 Comments Chris clark voice of the pc friarsThey also were coming into the future, even if no one knew that yet. Now they were coming into everyone’s living room. No longer were the Friars playing in a 3,300-seat gym on campus, available only to the people fortunate enough to have a ticket. So what, right? But the game went three overtimes, the Friars won, and the following Monday the advertising people were standing in line.Ĭlark did his first televised game in the winter of 1961, a seminal moment in New England college basketball history, never mind Rhode Island. He talked his boss into doing a PC game at Villanova on a Saturday night. “Who listens to games on the radio?” his boss asked. But his dream was to do play-by-play, for he had come of age in New York City listening to Marty Glickman and Mel Allen do games on the radio. That is the reason Clark’s name was placed in the rafters of the Dunk on Saturday afternoon, right there with the rest of the Friar icons who will live forever in PC history.įor no one ever brought the Friars story to the public better than Chris Clark, even if he never set out to do it.Ĭlark was just a young sportscaster then, had come to Providence in 1955 after a stint at a Newport radio station and three years at another station in New Bedford. PROVIDENCE - You have to be a certain age to remember him, of course, had to be around when the Friars basketball story was just beginning.Īnd maybe you had to be a kid who loved basketball back then in the late ’50s, a kid who used to listen to the games through the static, lying there in the dark on some lost winter night listening to the Friars on an old radio to fully appreciate the impact he had on the Providence College basketball story.Īnd maybe you had to be one of those subway alumni back then, many of whom weren’t really sure where Providence College actually was, but were forever linked to the school because of a basketball team that seemed to come out of nowhere and take the entire state along on the ride.Īnd maybe you had to live in an era where there were no Patriots that went into January, and not much sports to watch on television, and then seemingly out of nowhere came the Friars to help you through the winter.įor there’s no question that Chris Clark was one of the main reasons for the longtime love affair between this state and Providence College, one that continues to this day, more than half a century later.
